The overland journey from Cairo to Siwa Oasis covers approximately 750 km (460 miles) and takes around 8 to 9 hours. To make the drive comfortable, travel is conducted in private, air-conditioned luxury vehicles with scheduled stops along the Mediterranean coast (such as El Alamein or Marsa Matrouh) to break up the journey with sightseeing and lunch.
In Siwa, accommodations focus on eco-luxury stays rather than traditional concrete high-rises. Deluxe Standard packages feature high-end boutique ecolodges (such as Ghaliet Ecolodge & Spa or Taziry Ecolodge), built using traditional Siwan organic materials (karsheef salt-clay and palm wood) paired with modern ensuite bathrooms, swimming pools, and spa services.
The Siwa Salt Lakes have high salinity levels similar to the Dead Sea, allowing swimmer buoyancy and therapeutic benefits. It is recommended to bring a swimsuit you don't mind getting salt-crusted and a freshwater bottle or fresh water shower access to rinse off afterward. Desert hot and cold springs (like Bir Wahed) offer warm, mineral-rich waters surrounded by dunes.
The desert excursion into the Great Sand Sea is conducted in private 4x4 Jeeps driven by experienced local desert drivers. Activities include dune bashing across rolling sand dunes, sandboarding down golden slopes, fossil viewing in pre-historic seabed sites, visiting desert springs, and enjoying traditional Bedouin tea at sunset.
Siwa has a distinct Berber/Amazigh cultural identity with conservative local traditions. Modest clothing (covering shoulders and knees) is recommended when walking around Siwa town, Shali Fortress, and local markets. Mobile phone signal and Wi-Fi are reliable in Cairo and central Siwa town, though coverage may be limited during deep desert safari excursions in the Sand Sea.
